Far about 15km from Sapa town towards Lai Chau province and Dien Bien province, Silver Waterfall (Thac Bac) is situated in San Sai Ho commune, Sapa district, Lao Cai province. The waterfall is located right next to National Highway 4D, the arterial roads to Lai Chau province, which is fairly convenient to visit.

“Bac” means “silver” in English, that is why the Waterfall also has another name, which is “Silver Waterfall”. It is because the water here is very strong, therefore when it flows fiercely toward the bottom, it creates a brilliant white strip of water, striking and outstanding on the rocky cliff. Therefore, local people start to call it “Thac Bac”, or “Silver Waterfall” in English.

In the summer months from April to August, the weather is very comfortable, with moderate temperatures and less rain, which is ideal for sightseeing. September and October are the months of ripe rice, so if you come during this time, you can admire the golden terraced fields on the way to Silver Waterfall Sapa.
In winter, the temperature drops, and fog covers the area, making the scenery even more tranquil. Thac Bac Waterfall is also one of the few places in Vietnam where tourists can find snow on very cold days. Also, winter is the best time if you want to enjoy the spot without crowds.
To make the trip easier for visitors, two staircases had been built on each side of Thac Bac Waterfall, one is the way up while the other is the way down. Standing on the rocky stairwells, not only you can have a closer look at the Waterfall but also get to see the breathtaking, magnificent view of the whole Sapa town around.
